The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge

The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge winner was announced in September at the Teton Valley Community School in Victor, Idaho. Section Eight (design), the Challenge winner, partnered with Teton Valley Community School to develop a holistic design that can be adapted and replicated in other schools.

Let's keep going.
According to the World Bank, educating all children worldwide will require the construction of 10 million new classrooms in more than 100 countries by 2015. At the same time, millions of existing classrooms are in serious need of repair and refurbishment.

Test scores in green schools show a 20% improvement over students tested in non-green schools, according to a study conducted by the Heschong Mahone Group
Learn more about the benefits about green design.

We asked designers and architects to partner with students and teachers to envision the classroom of the future. We have received some fantastic classroom designs which are now available for viewing but we would love to see lots more.

The competition may be over but the need for better designed classrooms still continues. Submit your design on the Open Architecture Network and tell us about it at challenge@architectureforhumanity.org

Architects and designers, you can still work with students and teachers continuing to spread awareness about the learning environment. Address the challenges schools face in trying to provide smart, safe and sustainable learning spaces.
